What would life be like without forgiveness?
Toddlers would never learn to share and shake hands after a tussle. Adults would not back down from silly squabbles. Our daily lives would be framed with bitterness and grudges.
But we do live in a world with forgiveness. The question is, are you using the forgiveness that is available to you? Each and every day we make mistakes that offend both others and ourselves. without forgiveness, these offenses can leave us empty and in a place that is very far from God. This is no way to live. In the same way, those who offend us also need our forgiveness.
Colossians 3:13 tells us, “Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.” We must view forgiveness in the same way that our Heavenly Father does. He has forgiven each of us by providing his Son, Jesus, as a ransom to die in our places.
Many times we refrain from forgiving others and ourselves of past sins committed. By doing so, we deny ourselves the freedom of mind that we so greatly need. Forgiving ourselves and others sets us free. Forgiveness makes our faith grow. Freeing ourselves and others gives us a fresh start with God. This brings us closer and closer to God in the process.
Forgiveness is never easy, but if you can do it, you will find freedom like you have never felt before. I think we would all like to have the weight of unforgiveness off our backs.
