Well, it’s another Friday. Since tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day, I thought I would share with you all my Top 10 Irish Drinking Songs. You can agree or disagree, but I hope you enjoy. Don’t forget to wear something green.
Beer, Beer, Beer (Clancy Brothers)
This song has an easy chorus to remember which makes it a great sing-a-long song. Besides, any song with the word beer in it must be great.
Bugger Off (Dubliners)
“Like a Herd of Bloody Swine That Refuse to Leave the Trough, You’ll Get No More This Evening So You Bastards Bugger Off.” Enough said.
Whiskey in the Jar (Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, and others)
Live version by the Dubliners much later in life
Version by Thin Lizzy
Version by Metallica
Definitely one of the more famous Irish drinking songs. Done by many, many groups. This song is done in many different styles and is definitely one of my favorites.
Finnegan’s Wake (Dropkick Murphys)
Great mix of Irish fold and Punk. I really like what this group does with this song. Lot’s of energy.
Fairytale of New York (Pogues with Kristy MacColl)
Video by the Pogues
This is the song that was played at the wake in the bar in the movie PS I Love You. It is a song that speaks of Christmas, but I think it is a great St. Paddy’s Day song too. This is a beautifully bittersweet song about two lovers in the clutches of alcoholism and drug addiction.
Seven Deadly Sins (Flogging Molly)
Seven drunken pirates. A modern-day sea shanty.
Irish Drinking Song (Buck O Nine)
No, this is not Reel Big Fish. This is Buck O Nine. Just love this Irish song by a ska band.
Down to the Old Pub Instead (Steven Lynch)
If you can’t laugh at this, you don’t have a sense of humor.
Kiss Me I’m Shitfaced (Dropkick Murphys)
“I Play One Mean Guitar and Then Score at the Bar”
A song about a sad drunken braggart. I think if he had a theme song, this would probably it.
Worst Day Since Yesterday (Flogging Molly)
Live version by Flogging Molly
Great mix of Irish fold and Country and Blues. Great song!
And just to celebrate this great holiday, I wanted to give you one extra song. Maybe one of the best known Irish songs of all-time.
Danny Boy (everyone)
Check out this performance on Britain’s Got Talent!
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
I hope you all have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day!
