The Last Resort

Another Friday.  Another song.  This song really holds a special place in my heart.  The message is really strong and the melody is really moving.  Please read on to discover the meaning of what this song is talking about.  We really do live on aq very lovely planet.  We need to keep that in mind and keep it beautiful for future generations.

I have always loved the Eagles and I really like Hotel California and several of their A-side songs, but this song really stirs my soul.  I would have to say that it is definitely my favorite Eagles song.  I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do.  Enjoy!

The Last Resort” is a song written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, which tells about how man inevitably destroys the places he finds beautiful.  It was originally released on the Eagles’ album Hotel California on December 8. 1976.  It was subsequently released as the B-side of “Life in the Fast Lane” single on May 3, 1977.

In a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone, Henley said: “‘The Last Resort’, on Hotel California, is still one of my favorite songs… That’s because I care more about the environment than about writing songs about drugs or love affairs or excesses of any kind.  The gist of the song was that when we find something good, we destroy it by our presence — by the very fact that man is the only animal on earth that is capable of destroying his environment.  The environment is the reason I got into politics: to try to do something about what I saw as the complete destruction of most of the resources that we have left. We have mortgaged our future for gain and greed.”

Glenn Frey told Redbeard on an episode of In the Studio with Redbeard (which devoted an entire episode to the making of Hotel California) “I have to give all the credit for “The Last Resort” to (Don) Henley.  It was the first time that Don, on his own, took it upon himself to write an epic story.  We were very much at that time, concerned about the environment and doing anti-nuclear benefit (concerts).  It seemed the perfect way to wrap up all of the different topics we had explored on the Hotel California album.  Don found himself as a lyricist with that song, kind of outdid himself…We’re constantly screwing up paradise and that was the point of the song and that at some point there is going to be no more new frontiers.  I mean we’re putting junk, er, garbage into space now.  There’s enough crap floating around the planet that we can’t even use so it just seems to be our way.  It’s unfortunate but that is sort of what happens”.

It is an important and elegiac song, being the last song on the album Hotel California and effectively the last statement by the band and reflects on the end of the American dream of the frontier.  Critic William Ruhlmann said of it that it “sketches a broad, pessimistic history of America that borders on nihilism.”

“The Last Resort”

She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea

She heard about a place people were smilin’
They spoke about the red man’s way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide

Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can’t wait to tell you all,
what it’s like up there
And they called it paradise
I don’t know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high

Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do

Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught ’em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought ’em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea

You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: “Jesus is coming”
Brought the white man’s burden down
Brought the white man’s reign

Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
‘Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here

We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God

And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it’s like up there
They call it paradise
I don’t know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

About wmarsau

Most of the people who visit this blog already know me so it is kind of pointless to try to describe my life in this short little blurb. What is the purpose of this blog is the question. Over the course of this last year I have been exposed to some amazing people and have made personal development an important focus of my life. Being successful, not by the world's standards, but by God's has become my main focus. Mainly, I want to work to develop myself as a person who is kinder, reaches out to help those in need, and truly makes a difference in this world. To this end I am constantly reading and am exposed to so many differnet things along the way. These have been amazing and it is helping me grow so much. Then I started to think, "Why am I being so selfish?" You need to share with others these amazing things you are learning and being exposed to. That is where this blog comes into play. As I am reading and experiencing things that are truly amazing and life changing, I will be posting them on this blog. Obviously, I will not be able to post everything in it's entirity, but I will be summarizing them and letting you know the source of the article or book they come from so you can check them out later if you wish. I want this blog to be a place where you can go to often and be inspired and leave here with a smile on your face. I will be covering all kinds of different topics dealing with success and personal development. Topics like taking action, relationships, living to your potential, reinventing yourself, finances, leadership, presenting, goal setting, time management, etc. I will also be occasionally including topics on cooking, music, and gardening because they are special interests of mine. As a little disclaimer, I have given my life to the Lord and he is #1 in my life. I am his servant and everything I do in life is for his glory. With that being said, religion influences all areas of my life. There will be references to God in this blog because I can't seperate God from this or any other area of my life. I want you to know that if you do not believe in God, that is fine. That is your choice. This blog is open to anyone who wants to better their life. I will not be trying to influence or pressure anyone into having a relationship with the Lord from this site. Please don't feel uncomfortable. You can just read the portions of the blog that you wish to. I am inviting you to go on a journey with me. We will learn together to be the kind of people we were designed to be. Anyone can make a difference in this world, but it starts%
